Golf Son Gual
Son Gual – the World of Leading Golf’s champion course of 2014 – opened in 2007 and is 42 in the Golf World Top 100 Golf Courses in Continental Europe 2017 ranking, making the EUR 30m Thomas Himmel-designed course the top venue in Mallorca.
Borne of a desire in its owner for Mallorca to have a golf course worthy of the sunshine island, Son Gual was sculpted expertly out of a large piece of barren agricultural land. The transformation into a world-class course has created a venue which features large lakes, 66 bunkers, 800 olive trees – some more than a thousand years old – wild flowers in the rough and vineyards in several areas around the course. It includes several outstanding, memorable holes including an 18th described by one reviewer as a “serious contender for Europe’s best par-five and Spain’s most dramatic 18th”.
In May 2009 Son Gual hosted the Mallorca Senior Open with former Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam saying: “It’s a bit like Augusta. You’ve got to get the ball on the right side of the hole. Miss it on the wrong side and you’re dead.”
